Grandpa and the Kite

今天天气很好，小明去公园玩儿。

Jīntiān tiānqì hěn hǎo, Xiǎo Míng qù gōngyuán wánr.

The weather was very good today, and Xiaoming went to the park to play.

他有一个新风筝，是红色的。

Tā yǒu yí gè xīn fēngzheng, shì hóngsè de.

He had a new kite, a red one.

可是风筝一直在地上，飞不起来。

Kěshì fēngzheng yìzhí zài dìshang, fēi bù qǐlai.

But the kite stayed on the ground and could not fly.

旁边的老人看见了，笑着走过来。

Pángbiān de lǎorén kànjiàn le, xiào zhe zǒu guòlai.

An old man nearby saw this and walked over, smiling.

“孩子，你叫什么名字？”

“Háizi, nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?”

“Child, what is your name?”

“我叫小明。”“我姓王，你叫我王爷爷吧。”

“Wǒ jiào Xiǎo Míng.” “Wǒ xìng wáng, nǐ jiào wǒ Wáng yéye ba.”

“I'm Xiaoming.” “My surname is Wang. Call me Grandpa Wang.”

王爷爷说：“放风筝，要先看风。”

Wáng yéye shuō: “Fàng fēngzheng, yào xiān kàn fēng.”

Grandpa Wang said, “To fly a kite, first look at the wind.”

“风从北边来，我们站在南边。”

“Fēng cóng běibiān lái, wǒmen zhàn zài nánbian.”

“The wind comes from the north, so we stand in the south.”

小明听得很认真。

Xiǎo Míng tīng de hěn rènzhēn.

Xiaoming listened very carefully.

小明拿着风筝，跑得很快。

Xiǎo Míng ná zhe fēngzheng, pǎo de hěn kuài.

Xiaoming held the kite and ran very fast.

风筝飞起来了，可是一会儿又掉了。

Fēngzheng fēi qǐlai le, kěshì yíhuìr yòu diào le.

The kite flew up, but soon fell again.

“别急，再来一次！”王爷爷说。

“Bié jí, zài lái yí cì!” Wáng yéye shuō.

“Don't worry, try once more!” said Grandpa Wang.

这一次，风筝飞得很高。

Zhè yí cì, fēngzheng fēi de hěn gāo.

This time, the kite flew very high.

小明高兴地喊：“我会放风筝了！”

Xiǎo Míng gāoxìng de hǎn: “Wǒ huì fàng fēngzheng le!”

Xiaoming shouted happily, “I can fly a kite now!”

王爷爷也笑了。

Wáng yéye yě xiào le.

Grandpa Wang smiled too.

天黑以前，他们坐下来休息。

Tiān hēi yǐqián, tāmen zuò xiàlai xiūxi.

Before dark, they sat down to rest.

小明说：“谢谢您，王爷爷！”

Xiǎo Míng shuō: “Xièxie nín, Wáng yéye!”

Xiaoming said, “Thank you, Grandpa Wang!”

“明天还来吗？”“我一定来！”

“Míngtiān hái lái ma?” “Wǒ yídìng lái!”

“Will you come again tomorrow?” “I will definitely come!”
